"Make Everyday Like Friday and Make Every Friday Like Christmas!"

Wasatch Wave Article Worth Reading!

I'm posting this information because I think it's important for the people of Heber City now and for our future...

There was this GREAT cover story in the WAVE (see below) and there were two EXCELLENT letters sent to the editor I thought you would want to read!

It's about my friend and choice for mayor, write-in candidate Erik Rowland!
Not only did Councilman Rowland come up with Heber Unplugged, which was a HUGE success, but I have every confidence he will obey city laws and ordinances when elected and not just pick and choose... (see Letters to the Editor below)

It is time to kick the GOOD OLD BOY SYSTEM out the door and to stop electing someone because they have a last name we recognize!!

Call or email if you want to know more about Erik Rowland and why I think he is the ONLY choice for Mayor of Heber!

Thanks,
DanielSig

VOTE TODAY! (there's still time)

I just wanted to let you know you can vote until 8PM tonight so don't forget to go!

I've made over 300 contacts in the last 24-hours to remind folks to vote in the Heber City Primary.

Here's the story:

There are seven candidates and you can vote for TWO!  That way four will remain to vote for in the November general election.

I am supporting Kelleen Potter and Rod Hopkins.  Here's what my wife Cynthia wrote about Kelleen on Facebook earlier today:
    • "I like Kelleen Potter because of her education, actual experienceKelleen2013 and her  ability to communicate and work with others. I don't know her personally, but she took the time to talk with me and answer my questions. She is very approachable. I liked what she had to say on her website too."

CLICK HERE TO VIEW HER WEBSITE:

I have also talked to Rod Hopkins and asked him some tough questions.  He struck a cord in me when he talked about these three things on his weHopkins2013bsite:
  1. Honoring the Past
  2. Managing the Present
  3. Planning the Future

Check out his website and see if he has what you're looking for: www.HopkinsForHeber.com

So please, go out and vote today!  It's still not too late!

We hope you will support the Heber Valley Unplugged Campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to get kids out and active in our community. This campaign was initially started when Heber City Councilman Erik Rowland and Heber City Police Chief Dave Booth were discussing the effects of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary and the relationship of video games and violence in schools. So many people asked what could be done to prevent this from happening again. While we don’t have all the answers, studies have found that by unplugging violent video games aggressive behavior is reduced, school performance increased and children’s behaviors overall were improved.

We have so many wonderful activities, locations and events happening throughout the summer in Heber Valley. Join us as we get Unplugged. Your cost is $120 to purchase 250 Brag tags that will represent your activity. We will design the tags for you. All you need to do is tell us which activity you want to sponsor. Go to: http://heberunplugged.com/
Check out the sample of brag tags online. If you are interested you can register on the website or call me direct.
We will have information in the Summer Magazine distributed to 7,500 people in the valley, plus weekly articles in the Wave promoting different activities within the Unplugged Campaign. We will be printing materials soon, so we would need a commitment and information about your program no later than March 29th.

Heber City Ranked 6th of Fastest-Growing Micro Areas!

The Deseret News reported today that Heber City was ranked by the U.S. Census Bureau as No. 6 on the list of fastest-growing micro areas (areas with an urban core population of at least 10,000 but less than 50,000) in the nation during 2012.

Heber City Council Meeting March 7, 2013

I try to go to as many meetings as possible.  If I can't make it to the meeting personal, then I follow-up with someone who did and I read the minutes to create this blog entry.  You always have the option to read the minutes yourself at the link below.

In the Regular Meeting, the ordinance was presented to adopt the new water and sewer rates.  Soon after the motion was made, McDonald read a prepared statement (author unknown) about why he and his do not support the water rate.

As soon as he was finished, Rowland was surprised McDonald didn't bring his concerns up sooner after working on this with Zions Bank for so long...   Once again, trying to appear as the "people's choice" when it comes to increased fees.  Even though these fees are necessary to the future of Heber's infrastructure.

The vote was taken and what should have been a unanimous vote came out to four YES and one NO.

Thanks a lot McDonald...  I'll make sure everyone remembers this come election time.

Councilman Rowland in a reconvened Work Meeting presented a youth violence prevention program for the city. The cost of the program would be about $9,000 and Heber City would be the first city to promote such a community initiative of this kind.

The idea was to work with parents to replace violent video games with outdoor healthy activity.

Called UNPLUGGED.

They all agreed to fund $3,000.

I heard after the fact that the $3,000 will be coming from the Board Money Rowland refuses to accept and instead turns over to the city.  Now that my friends is LEADERSHIP!

Finally!

The council is ready to vote on the much needed water increases after almost 18-months of study provided by Zions Bank.

They voted on a rate adjustment to create a funding source to pay for the deficit as well as the upcoming ten years of improvements to the system.

Not everyone agreed on this rate adjustment.  They approved the proposed rates and voted to apply the rates in an upcoming city council meeting.

VOTING FOR:  Mergist, Bradshaw and Rowland.

VOTING AGAINST: McDonald and Patterson

I am going to track down why McDonald voted against and post that information here so both sides are represented.

What a GREAT place to EAT!

I have to tell you, I have been to MEXICO many times and I love Mexican food!!

And In Utah, I can't find a Mexican restaurant as good as we have right here in Heber Valley!

Tarahumara's over in Midway gets my VOTE!  Greg, Gloria and David do an excellent job making authentic food with tremendous service.

With that glowing recommendation, you should know my daughter Tori works there when she's not at SUU!

Which makes it even more fun to show up on a FRIDAY night to enjoy their SALSA BAR that is out-of-this-world!  Salsa to fit every person whether you like it burning hot or mild like ketchup!  I love the Mango Salsa and the Honey Habanero!

So if you love the "real deal" when it comes to Mexican food and you prefer to support local family businesses instead of a big national corporate restaurants, then TARAHUMARA'S is the place for you!

I try to go to as many meetings as possible.  If I can't make it to the meeting personal, then I follow-up with someone who did and I read the minutes to create this blog entry.  You always have the option to read the minutes yourself at the link below.

There was an interesting discussion today in the Work Meeting.  The County (Tom Bonner and John Provost) came in and asked permission to erect an 18' X 14' an LED reader sign in the city park as a method to get information to the general public.

The City Council was rightly concerned because the size was way beyond the restrictions allowed by ordinance.

They council also felt it would take away from the integrity of the historic nature of the city core.  Everyone express mutual concern and agreed not to allow the sign except for MCDONALD who said they should just go ahead and do it.

Makes me think who he owes a favor to at the county, we he agrees so readily for something so not in the public's best interest.

Suggestions were made to make the sign smaller and place one at each end of the city.  The County said they would look into it and come back with any new ideas.

The discussion was continued tonight about a Veteran's Memorial for Heber City.

This has been going on for sometime.  A design and estimate has been presented.  The price tag would be $350,000.

After some discussion, PATTERSON moved that we should approve up to $300,000 to cover the cost of materials.

When asked where funding could come from to pay for the project, the City Manager said $88,000 could come from perpetual care fund, $100,000 for capital projects and $112,000 for the general fund.

It was a unanimously agreed to apply the above funds to the project.

I try to go to as many meetings as possible.  If I can't make it to the meeting personal, then I follow-up with someone who did and I read the minutes to create this blog entry.  You always have the option to read the minutes yourself at the link below.

Tonight the City's new policy for how public meetings are held was discussed in the Work Meeting.

Two documents were presented for consideration.  A short draft was presented by ROWLAND and a much longer draft was presented by MCDONALD.

A vote was then schedule for the next scheduled Regular Meeting.

In the Regular Meeting tonight, the City council finally defined the city's form of government:
  1. The powers of the municipality of Heber City is vested in a council consisting of six members, one of which is a mayor.
  2. The mayor and five council members shall be chosen at large by the qualified voters of Heber City.
  3. Heber City has a City Manager (created by ordinance and in accordance with state staute) who is a professional manager appointed by the governing body who has been delegated the administrative power and authority of the city to oversee daily operations.
The vote was as follows;
  • FOR - Patterson, Bradshaw and Rowland
  • AGAINST - McDonald and Mergist
This issue had bother many people for a long time and hats off to the City Council for getting this one right.

Look, if a city councilman is trying to get rid of the City Manager and give more power to the Mayor than we all need to keep an eye out on who shows up on the ballot for the next Mayoral Election...

I will be that EYE IN THE SKY and keep you posted.

Another meeting with Zions Bank talking about the water study.  Findings were presented showing the short-falls and where improvements can be made.

Prior to this, the council has been talking to this for over a year all about the culinary rates and secondary rates.

Devon McKrola was also at this meeting.  He is over the Wasatch Irrigation Company.  Nothing exciting, but as Zions continues to report on the study, it will be important to see what the City Council does with the information

This was a SPECIAL MEETING and I could not find the minutes online to link to this post.

In this meeting the APPROVAL was unanimous to return money to the businesses that had paid impact storm water fees.

The city had decided to bill storm water fees monthly and felt it import to return money to the businesses that would be double charged.  The fees will be returned with interest. Total to be refunded is $155,242.00.

This ends up being a positive city action reducing overall fees to businesses and further promoting the commitment by the city to further economic growth.

It was brought to the city councils attention in previous meetings that there was an issue with parking in the street during heavy snow removal.  The equipment could not do an adequate job if there were cars parking on the street for extended periods of time.

A Snow Clean-up ordinance was approved to clarify that whenever a snowplow was in effect that vehicles were not allowed to be park on the street for longer than 24-hours.

"Between Nov 15th and Apr 1st a person can not park or leave parked any vehicle on the cities paved portion of the street under the following circumstances:
  • If there is any amount of snow on the street
  • If it is snowing or has snowed within the past 24-hours
  • If the street hasn't been plowed since the snow fall.
The penalty is a ticket and if you keep doing it you vehicle may be impounded.

As part of this ordinance any non-motorized vehicle may not be parked on any street, alley, sidewalk, park strip, right away or any other public property.

It was pass unanimously.

I live in Timp Meadows and it will be interesting to see if this ordinance will even be enforced...

I try to go to as many meetings as possible.  If I can't make it to the meeting personal, then I follow-up with someone who did and I read the minutes to create this blog entry.  You always have the option to read the minutes yourself at the link below.

This meeting included a PUBLIC HEARING on the increase salary compensation for the city council  and mayor.

Several members of the public made comments including the ever LONG WINDED Tracy Taylor.

Councilman McDonald even suggested to have the Mayor's compensation increased beyond even that of the other council members because of all his hard work.  Makes me think Alan wants to be Mayor someday and is trying to give himself a "future" pay raise.

After several failed motion attempts they finally passed an increase of $400 per month for each council member.

The YES votes were:  PATTERSON, MERGIST and BRADSHAW.

The NO votes were: MCDONALD and ROWLAND.

Folks also showed up about the Airport Lease Rates.  If you remember an entry I wrote last month, the city needed to increase Lease Rates and decrease the Sales Price of Hangers to promote the sale of these Hangers.

Hanger leasees showed up and were upset (obviously) and it appeared to everyone that several council members and was unwilling to keep on track with the clear recommendation of the Airport Board.

Mergist motioned to leave the rates the same and McDonald seconded the motion.  Rowland added the leases needed to be increase even if it's not 60% recommended by the airport board.

The vote was taken to leave the rates the same.

The YES votes were:  PATTERSON, MERGIST and MCDONALD.

The NO votes were: BRADSHAW and ROWLAND.

Once again, a few "customers" of the city dictated their will over the best interest of the entire city.  Get a backbone will you guys!
